My collection mainly consists of hand-painted world maps with a cheerful and cozy look in watercolor. But in this case I was inspired by computer games that I also like to play, such as the game series Fallout and The Outer Worlds, which have an abundance of rusty spaceships, air raid shelters, an industrial style and a constant dark and menacing atmosphere.

This rugged world map is an amalgamation of a photographic image of a corroded piece of metal and painting in Petrol Blue watercolor on a fiber rich cotton watercolor paper. The world map has a lot of structures, hard yellow and black colors and a cool, striking black outline as a shadow border.

For this world map I went out especially to photograph rust. For this I went to Heijplaat in Rotterdam at the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij, also known as RDM. My grandparents used to live in Heijplaat and it seemed interesting to me to visit this cool industrial environment after a long time and to look specifically for corroded steel along the quay and in the industrial area of ​​RDM.

The rust I used in this artwork comes from a small steel wagon. The metal was heavily corroded and consisted of several structures, namely the black paint that rusted through, a yellow and orange paint that peeled off and rust came through and a heavily corroded rust layer with a rough structure in dark brown and orange earthy colors that you are used to. can be seen in old rust.

The background in a Petrol Blue color is made by myself and consists of a fiber-rich cotton watercolor paper on which I painted with watercolor paint using the wet on wet technique. The paint has a nice granulation that has a rough appearance on the fiber rich paper. I then digitally brought all the elements together and edited them into one sturdy whole.
