This rugged world map is a fusion of a photo image of a corroded piece of metal and painting in watercolor on a fiber-rich cotton watercolor paper.
For this world map, I went out especially to photograph rust. For this I went to Heijplaat in Rotterdam near the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij ( RDM ). My grandparents lived in heijplaat and it seemed interesting to me to visit this cool area after a long time and specifically look for corroded steel along the quay and in the industrial area of RDM.
The rust I used in this work of art comes from a steel leg of a crane. The metal was heavily corroded and consisted of three structures, namely the black paint that was still intact, a smooth orange rust layer and a heavily corroded rust layer with a rough structure.
The black background is also homemade and consists of a fiber-rich cotton watercolor paper on which I painted with black watercolors using the wet on wet technique. The paint has a nice granulation that gives it a rough appearance. I then digitally brought all the elements together and edited them into one piece.
In short, a special world map for those who love metallurgy and a rough Grunge look in the interior such as in the living room, bedroom, kitchen, home office or reception hall.
