The Wouda Steam Pumping Station was opened by Queen Wilhelmina in 1920. The Wouda Steam Pumping Station was urgently needed during the heavy rainfall in the winter of the 19th and early 20th century. The heavy rainfall caused a lot of inconvenience. The locks and windmills could not cope with the heavy rainfall, that is why the Wouda Steam Pumping Station was used to drain the drainage water so that Friesland would not be flooded.
The largest steam-powered pumping station in the world still plays an important role in Friesland's water management to this very day.
