Tips for use

Point your camera at the floor or a piece of furniture first, then move it slowly up towards the wall. A bare white wall is hard for your phone to recognise.
Move your phone gently from side to side. Holding it still or waving it around quickly does not help.
Make sure there is enough light. In a dark room your phone has nothing to lock onto.

About ‘Xenia sp.’ by Enak Cortebeeck

In the underwater world, animals are far more numerous than plants. Literally every centimetre of a reef is therefore worth a closer look.

There is just as much beauty in thousands of feeding polyps swaying in the current as there is in a curious shark gliding majestically past.

As for the Latin name: based on this photo, it looks most like a species from the genus Xenia to me, so Xenia sp. The long polyps with eight finely feathered tentacles fit this description well. I wouldn’t go as far as identifying it to species level here; this close-up alone isn’t sufficient for that.

Enak Cortebeeck

Antwerpen, Belgium

ENAK CORTEBEECK is an Antwerp-based art director and designer, working in film, television, children’s media, user experience and socio-cultural campaigns. He has worked for clients including the BBC, Warner Bros., the European Union and De Filistijnen.

As well as his work as a designer, Enak is an underwater photographer. In his images, he explores texture, colour and the silent geometry of coral ecosystems.
