About "Young fox facing the outside world"

by Jaap La Brijn

About the artwork

The mating season ("ran time") of foxes is in January. About two months later, the then blind young are born in an underground burrow. They stay in the den for the first three to four weeks.
The most exciting moment for the young foxes is when they first appear at the entrance to the den. They do not yet have the reddish-brown colour of adult foxes then, but are more grey-blue.
After a few days, they dare to leave the den and start playing outside more and more. They are then also regularly looked after by the mother outside the den. After that, they grow up very quickly and are independent after about seven months.
The little fox in this picture is about's six weeks old and already dares to venture outside the den regularly. Its fur is still grey-brown, but is already starting to turn reddish-brown on its head.
