About ‘Zaan curve’ by Jeroen de Jongh Photography

Wormerveer is a village and was until 1974 an independent municipality in the province of North Holland, located on the Zaan. The hamlet Westknollendam was part of the municipality. Since 1 January 1974 it has been part of the municipality of Zaanstad. The town has a railway station, station Wormerveer. Wormerveer has approximately 11,340 inhabitants (2019).

The town name is a reference to a ferry across the Zaan to the village of Wormer on the other side. Although the ferry is no longer applicable, the name of the town has not changed over the years.

Already in the 14th century there was a ferry across the Zaan between the present Wormer Lake and the village of Wormer. It was strategically located and fulfilled an important function for overland passenger traffic between Kennemerland (Haarlem) and Waterland (Purmerend). There was some occupancy around the ferry but there was no village yet. The place was known as 't Saen'. Administratively and ecclesiastically this area (like Krommenie, the later Zaandijk and Koog aan de Zaan and West-Zaandam) was part of the Banne Westzaan. In Westzaan were the Rectory and the parish church.
