Initially set up as a residential neighborhood, the area attracted more and more tourists for which it was not calculated. Colonial Williamsburg was looked at as a tourist living neighborhood. Between 1970 and 1974 the plan was expanded to include historic buildings (restaurant 'De Kraai', warehouse 'De Lelie' and 'De Bezem') and several replicas suitable for hospitality and tourism. Also, an additional parking lot was created on the spot where initially a school was to be built. From 1976, the Zaanse Schans as a tourist destination was a fact.
