Zermatt in the southern Swiss canton of Valais is a mountain resort popular with skiers, climbers and hikers. The town lies at an altitude of 1,600 metres at the foot of the famous pyramid-shaped Matterhorn. Zermatt's main street, Bahnhofstrasse, is home to boutiques, hotels and restaurants as well as a lively après-ski scene.
Zermatt's location at the foot of the Matterhorn and in the middle of a large hiking and skiing region makes it one of the most attractive holiday villages in the world. The ski area comprises 54 cable cars and lifts and 360 kilometres of pistes. The "Matterhorn glacier paradise" area is the largest and highest summer ski area in Europe. Numerous national ski teams train here in summer.
At an altitude of 4,478 metres, the majestic Matterhorn - probably the most famous mountain in Europe - stretches out in a breathtaking Alpine panorama. Switzerland's freestanding landmark is located on the border of the western Swiss canton of Valais - between Zermatt and the Italian town of Breuil-Cervinia.
