Tips for use

Point your camera at the floor or a piece of furniture first, then move it slowly up towards the wall. A bare white wall is hard for your phone to recognise.

About ‘Zeus and Antiope’ by Jeroen Quirijns

A painting from 2001, inspired by "las Meninas" (de hofdames) van Diego Velázquez uit 1656, ik ging mij destijds om de figuur op de achtergrond, bij Velázquez was dat de kamerheer van de koningin, bij mij een "toeschouwer"? We zien hier Zeus en Antiope, Zeus heeft zich omgetoverd tot een Faun/sater en verleid Antiope, uit deze "verleiding" raakt ze zwanger en baart een tweeling; Amphion and Zethos.
The painting features curtains on both sides; it is a staged scene, and it is and remains Greek mythology.
Blue and red are opposites: cold versus warm. The apple symbolises temptation; Adam and Eve’s apple. According to mythology, Antiope is ashamed of this event and flees into the mountains. To make the scene more human, I have chosen a plain carpet and striped linen on the left and, yes, there it is again, the fruit bowl that refers to Zeuxis, the founder of illusionist painting.
It is a painting brimming with references to art, mythology, theatre, emotion, temptation and, ultimately, adultery and the birth of the twins. You might well ask: what does Velázquez have to do with this? Picasso created his own version of this painting, and the figure in the background – the chamberlain – has always stayed with me. Whether you turn left or right, as an artist you cannot ignore Picasso, and so this painting was born out of that interest ; )
