About ‘heading into summer’ by Wietske Westra

This work is part of my series inspired by walks along the Pieterpad. Whilst walking, I noticed how slowly the landscape changes as summer approaches. At first there are only bare branches and soft light, but suddenly blossoms, fresh green fields and warmer colours appear.

In this piece, you can see a sandy path winding through the landscape, past blossoming trees and open fields. The sky is clear and light, whilst small yellow flowers scattered in the grass add a touch of life. The combination of soft blues, fresh greens and warm accents creates a peaceful, almost dreamlike atmosphere.

The work is created using chalk, allowing the colours to blend softly into one another whilst the texture remains visible. It is precisely this loose, layered way of working that, for me, reflects nature: nothing is rigid or perfect; everything moves slowly with the seasons.

For me, this piece is about being on the move and noticing that the world around you is changing imperceptibly. It’s about a walk where you’re not rushing towards a destination, but discovering something small time and again. In an interior, this work brings a light, fresh and tranquil atmosphere. The soft colours make it suitable for spaces where you want to feel peace, nature and openness.
