he nuthatch (Sitta europaea) is a bird in the family of nuthatches (Sittidae). The scientific name of the species was published by Carl Linnaeus in 1758.[2] The name "nuthatch" refers to the plugging of the nest entrance, although walking up and down the tree trunk undoubtedly played a role as well.[3]
The nuthatch is the only member of the family in the Benelux. It can climb down tree trunks with its head down, and in this it differs from woodpeckers and treecreepers, which only climb up. Moreover, woodpeckers use their tails to support themselves, which the nuthatch does not.
It is a fairly common resident bird in almost all of Europe. Its distinctive and clear sounding call is often the first indication of its presence. In winter it is a regular visitor of gardens where peanuts are offered.
