The owls (Strigiformes) are an order of solitary birds with often a nocturnal way of life. Many owls have their eyes in the front of the head, so that they have a large binocular field of vision, in which they can see depth. Owls have well-developed ears that are far apart, which enables them to determine the direction from which a sound is coming. These characteristics make owls good hunters. Because of their nocturnal way of life, they are sometimes called nocturnal predators. The order is divided into two families: the real owls (Strigidae) and the barn owls (Tytonidae).
