Tips for use

About ‘pink jellyfish’ by Marie-Christine Goergen

I was walking along the Atlantic coast of Scotland and, once again, I simply couldn’t look away. Whilst others saw a multitude of dead jellyfish floating in the water, I saw intense shades of pink and blue, soft shapes and a recurring pattern. The jellyfish seemed to be swaying in the water. I found that repetition of colour and form so beautiful. Not scary creatures, but something that was colourful and yet calm. Serene. Gentle. Almost weightless. In this image, I’ve enhanced the pink and blue and played with light and contrast. I wanted to keep the jellyfish clearly recognisable, whilst at the same time allowing something abstract to emerge. As a result, for me, the image is primarily about colour, movement and atmosphere. And about the beauty and subtlety of something that isn’t actually that beautiful. That’s also what attracts me so much to Scotland: nature there can be rugged and impressive, yet at the same time incredibly beautiful and subtle. The thing about this image is that, from a distance, you mainly see a calm, colourful pattern. If you look more closely, you’ll discover what it is.

I can wander along a beach and almost forget that I’m actually on holiday, because I’m looking for something that others might not even notice.
