About the artwork

Socket tree (with view through) at sunrise in the Kalahari desert, Namibia.
The Quiver Tree or Tubular Tree is one of the most interesting and characteristic plants of the very hot and dry parts of Namibia and the northwestern part of the cap province in South Africa. The botanical name is Kokerboom. Dichotoma refers to the forked branches of the plant. The plant is called a Socket Tree, because some Bushman and Hottentot tribes used the tough, peelable bark and branches to make tubes for the arrows. The Kalahari is a semi-desert in southern Africa. It is an area of approximately 900,000 km². Although it is generally referred to as a desert, it is not, because there is considerably more rain than in a real desert. The Kalahari is a very varied area that includes large stretches of grassy steppe and savannah as well as sand desert. The area covers most of Botswana and eastern Namibia and parts of Zimbabwe, South Africa and Angola. The grassy areas are characterised by long stiff grass, prickly bushes and acacias. There are lions, hyenas, different kinds of antelopes, meerkats and baboons.
