Roses are cultivated for thousands of years for their beauty, and in ancient times this happened in China and Africa, by the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. Roses were used for rituals and there were temples and palaces adorned with. For the early Christians the rose symbolized the five wounds of Christ. Later, the rose was the symbol of the blood of the martyrs and became an attribute of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

In the Netherlands is growing roses documented from the second half of the sixteenth century. On exports of roses to England consists of written material; according to a French travelogue they were grown in the formal gardens of the palaces that were built in the seventeenth century by the royal family, as Honselaarsdijk palace.

The 1608 edition of the famous Cruydtboek of Rembert Dodoens mentions ten different types of roses, five domestic and five wild. Herbalists Matthias de l'Obel and Carolus Clusius added to this list dozens of other things. Eighteenth-century catalogs of Dutch rose growers have endless lists of seeing variations. A catalog of the French breeder Narcisse Desportes from 1829 contains no less than 2562 different types of roses.

Joséphine de Beauharnais, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte founded at her home Malmaison a rose garden in which all roses were then known. During the 18th
