The violet toerako (Musophaga violacea), also called violet shield toerako, is a bird of the family toerako's (Musophagidae). The bird is found in Africa.
The bird is about 50 cm long and weighs an average of 360 grams. It is an unmistakable bird, for the most part shiny violet in colour and depending on the incidence of light the bird can appear very dark or against green. Inside, the red on the wings is barely visible, but when the bird flies up, carmine red wing feathers contrast with the dark blue of the wing covers. Furthermore, this toerako has a large, thick red beak, at the front of the crown yellow and behind that red again, with a red ring around the eye. The iris is dark brown.
