Fog can form by cooling very humid air (to below the dew point) or by mixing cold with warm humid air. The formation of fog depends on many factors, such as air pollution, vegetation, relief and proximity to open water.
High-rise buildings in fog. (Bezuidenhout-West / Beatrixkwartier, The Hague, 2016)
Fog can form from cooling around sunset or often not until sunrise and forms first over a meadow, probably near a ditch where the air is moist. Fog banks drifting up the road initially dissolve there due to air movement and heat from traffic. The fog-free "tunnel" may last for a while on some sections of road, but in other places the fog banks linger. Such a situation, with large differences in visibility, is dangerous for traffic that only reduces speed in the fog.
