surrealism on canvas, poster, wallpaper and ArtFrame by Marc van der Heijden • Kampuchea Art

Surrealism is an art movement that emerged in the early 1920s as a literary movement before evolving into a prominent force in modern art. While its zenith is often identified between 1925 and 1940, spanning painting, sculpture, photography, and literature, surrealism continues to endure and actively shape the artistic landscape. The French writer and essayist André Breton played a pivotal role in crystallizing the principles of surrealism in art, particularly in painting and literature. In 1924, he codified his views on surrealism in the arts in the "Manifesto of Surrealism" (French: Manifeste du surréalisme). Regarding the relationship between surrealism and painting, Breton published "Le surréalisme et la peinture" in 1928, which was reissued in 1965 with numerous new additions. Disillusioned by the rationalism that proved overly optimistic in the face of the horrors of the First World War, and influenced by the ideas of Sigmund Freud, surrealists champion the state of consciousness characterized by free associations found in the realm of dreams.
