From a young age, Theodor Decker has had only two passions in his life: drawing and car design. In an interview with Art Heroes, the professional illustrator and graphic designer tells us more about his career.
Thorough research is essential
Since Theodor Decker's designs mainly derive from the world of classical motorsport, extensive research is really important. That's certainly true for vintage cars from the 1930s to the 1970s, particularly the 1950s and 1960s. Vintage cars have a timeless charm that never gets old. They are classic examples of technology and design that are still revered by car enthusiasts. Vintage cars are a throwback to a simpler time and the craftsmanship that was involved in their design. They're a unique and beautiful piece of history that will continue to be admired. Fans of his work are usually very knowledgeable and this means they won't accept any factual or historical errors.
Theodor's way of working
His artistic work has evolved over the years. From pencil and charcoal drawings to watercolours, airbrush techniques in the '80s, to pieces with the first Apple computers and Adobe programs, such as Illustrator and Photoshop. From realistic to commercial and expressive. Before starting a piece, Theodor already has a completed image in his head, minus a few details. When reality matches his vision, he knows that an artwork is finished.
Theodor's favourite artwork
Theodor: "My favourite artwork in recent years depicts a scene from the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. It shows the Ford GT40 of Ken Miles overtaking his opponent Lorenzo Bandini in the Ferrari 330P3 during the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966."
