About Kopffarben

Julia Schäfer (KOPFFARBEN artists’ collective)

My work lies at the intersection of analogue painting and digital light art.
Together with media artist Johannes Schmidt, I developed the light art form ‘Projection Painting’ from a foundation in painting, in which we project large-scale painted images and bring them to life through animation.

Through my independent acrylic paintings, I expand upon this work by exploring movement and change in a different way. Whilst the images in my light art are constantly transforming through animation, in my paintings I am able to capture individual moments. Yet even here, my figures continue a movement that seems to extend beyond the static pictorial space.

I am interested in states in which familiar notions of ourselves are called into question. What expectations shape our self-image? What is part of us, and what have we adopted? My paintings explore the open spaces in between, where something can dissolve and something new can emerge, without it being clear where the change will lead.
