About shari-art
My name is Shahrazad, and I live in Hout Bay, Cape Town.
A friend once asked, “How much of abstract art is actually down to chance?”
At first glance, flowing colours and emerging structures may seem accidental. But every line, every mark, every layer is either intentionally placed or consciously accepted. Nothing remains unless it feels right.
Opposites meet and interact: order and disruption, control and unpredictability, calm and intensity. Surfaces may appear quiet, yet cracks and textures reveal underlying tension. Raw, reduced tones stand alongside metallic elements such as gold, copper or bronze. Beneath visible layers, depth and complexity emerge. They reflect processes, experiences and the coexistence of contrasts. Each painting becomes an expression of an inner landscape shaped by contrasts. I work with acrylic paints and often create landscape paintings, though they are not intended as realistic representations. My works are abstract mood pieces. They draw inspiration from places I have travelled to and from the impressions these landscapes have left within me. In my paintings, I focus on the atmosphere, memory and emotion connected to a place. I try to capture the emotions I experienced (not only) in these locations: vastness, stillness, heat, wind, a sense of being grounded, or sometimes unease.
