About "096. St John's Cathedral"

by Ruud van den Berg

About the artwork

Under a deep night blue sky, in which a bright full moon hangs like a silent sentinel, the upper part of St John's Cathedral rises majestically. Its Gothic spires and aerial arches stand out sharply against the dark sky, illuminated by the soft, silver glow of the moon. The stone statues and ornaments, centuries of witness to faith and craftsmanship, cast long shadows sliding across the roofs. The windows, with their centuries-old stained glass, appear almost black in the night, but here and there a moonbeam catches a piece of coloured glass and illuminates a faint glimpse of red or blue.
Although the cathedral itself exudes a serene, almost solemn calm, this stillness contrasts with the energy palpable just outside the picture. In the square, beyond the edge of the artwork, the bustle of a jazz festival churns and stomps: Duketown is buzzing. The stirring rhythms and improvising horns seem to hit the old walls like an invisible wave, without really touching them. You can almost feel the pulse of the music vibrating in the stones, while the cathedral remains imperturbable, high above the revelry.
The artwork captures this tension: the hushed beauty of the historic building versus the vibrant, modern city around it. The sculpture seems to invite you to pause, look up, and experience the timeless presence of the cathedral - a beacon of calm in a city that never stands still.
