Against a bright red background, a seemingly simple but layered digital artwork unfolds, bringing together memory and expectation. At the centre of the image is a car key, casually laid down, resting on three classic Dutch candy wrappers: chocolate kruidnoten, Wilhelmina peppermint and Klene liquorice. Each bag is recognisable by its iconic design and evokes its own associations: festivity, tradition, familiarity.
The key acts as a symbol of departure - of movement towards the destination - and connects the domesticity of the sweets with the greater adventure: the journey to the ferry to Schiermonnikoog. Although the boat and the landscape of Schier itself are missing, the suggestion of destination becomes tangible through the title and composition.
The bright red background is both alienating and activating; the image seems to vibrate with anticipation. The colour evokes associations with energy, desire and perhaps also slight restlessness - befitting the feeling of leaving early one morning or rushing to pack for a spontaneous trip.
The artwork plays with nostalgia and reality, evoking the feeling of a snapshot from an everyday scene that sticks in the memory. "Schiermonnikoog 2023" is not a depiction of a landscape, but of an atmosphere - the silence in the car, the crunch of a peppermint candy, and the key waiting to be turned.
