The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine multi-purpose jet fighter that has been widely used since 1979. In the Netherlands and Belgium, among other countries, it was the successor to the F-104 Starfighter. In Belgium, the F-16 also replaced the Mirage 5. In the Netherlands, the F-5 was also replaced by the F-16. The aircraft was designed by General Dynamics. The factory of General Dynamics was taken over by Lockheed Martin. Although the F-16 is officially christened as the "Fighting Falcon", it is also referred to by pilots and ground personnel as the "Viper" , but this is only a reference to the F-16V which officially has the designation 'Viper'. A less common nickname is Electric Jet, because the F-16 is the first fly-by-wire fighter aircraft.
The current Dutch and Belgian version of the F-16 is the F-16A/B MLU (Mid-Life Update). This is the original version from 1979, which was brought to a higher standard by upgrades, which also guaranteed the availability for several years longer. In the Netherlands and Belgium, the F-16 is replaced by the F-35.
