The Malayan bee-eater (Merops viridis) is a bird in the family of bee-eaters (Meropidae). The scientific name of the species was published in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus. This species is found in the tropical mangrove forests of Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. In Borneo, it is the most common species of bee-eater, found mainly in sandy coastal areas in small breeding colonies. But the bird is also found hunting bees in forest areas more inland. Malayan bee-eaters from more northerly areas are probably migratory birds wintering in the Greater Sunda Islands.
