About "A Star to Steer By"

About the artwork

Children are given the benediction of "Sweet Dreams" after being read a bedtime story and tucked into bed. I wanted to capture a fantastical vision of a child's imagination turning a toy sailboat into their dreamship to sail among the celestial seas. Imagination and dreams are a powerful things for it can take you anywhere should you choose to set sail upon it.

I had taken a picture of the toy sailboat by the window months ago, but like some of my works I had yet to figure out how I wanted it to look exactly. Funny how when I finally sit down to work on creating the final product, it sometimes takes on a life of its own away from what I originally visualized. I had wanted to put a star field with the moon showing through and a overlaid 'map' naming some of the 'dream' celestial seas. But less is more, giving room for the imagination to set sail where ever the stars may take you.

Back in 2011 I had created a photo digital painting titled Sigma Sector 957 - Fleeing A Dying World. I went back and used that to create the star field sky and nebula clouds but had to go back to create a whole new starfield layer given that the original stars were not perfect.

For those who follow poetry you make recognize the line as it is from John Masefield poem. The full line is "And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by"
