A Linocut or is a printing technique, in which an image is cut out of a piece of linoleum. The technique can be compared to the woodcut.
Because cutting into the sheet of linoleum is easier - the material is softer - smoother lines can be created, but a linocut is usually somewhat coarser in drawing. This makes it more suitable than the woodcut for larger areas and large formats. The printing surfaces are smoother and lack the grain of the wood. (source Wikipedia)
