About ‘A magical sunset over the Wadden Sea’ by Erik Buitenhuis

On the last boat back from Schiermonnikoog on a lovely, quiet day. The sunset is beautiful and, as I usually do, I’m standing on deck enjoying the spectacle. Then something extraordinary happens with the light. Something I’ve never seen before (or since).

For about 10 seconds, the light seems to change every second. In this photo, the sea doesn’t look as though it’s made of water, but of something viscous. I was standing on deck watching with a few other people, and everyone had the same reaction: wow!

This photo means something special to me, and I’m glad I was able to capture this moment.
