Water played a decisive role in shaping the face of the Harz Mountains. In the course of millions of years, it carried away vast amounts of rock and created countless large and small valleys. The places which resisted this erosion best are called mountains today.
At the lowest points of the valleys, however, the water gathered to form streams. These joined together to form wild and powerful rivers. The water thus combined now dug itself even deeper into the rock. Bizarre and impressive landscapes are the result of this tireless work of the usually so seemingly harmless water.
Due to its exposed location, the Harz Mountains are a very water-rich mountain range even in our days. There is hardly a point here where the nearest stream is more than a few hundred meters away.
