The cooling tower is part of a power plant that opened in 1921. The power plant ran on coal. In the 1950s, the power plant was modernised and a new building was built next to the old one. From the 1970s, the power plant was further expanded and could also run on natural gas.
In 2007, the power plant was closed down, although some plants continued to run for several years. Across the water is the 57-metre-high cooling tower, which has also since been abandoned. The cooling tower was a film location of the Belgian thriller 'The Prime Minister'.
