This picture was taken at an old farmhouse in Groningen. Groningen is known for its numerous monumental farmhouses. The former granary of Europe was very prosperous and farmers used that prosperity to match the functionality of a farmhouse with the status of a merchant's house. But less and less often these farms are used for what they were built for. It is proving difficult to find an economically or socially profitable (re)use for this important heritage. Groningen has long since ceased to be the granary of Europe....
That is why many farms are empty. Often, demolition is too expensive and they stand in complete disrepair. When you enter such'a farm, the feeling of entering someone else's world overwhelms you. Sometimes you find family photos's.
I can imagine the gentleman of the house reading his newspaper in this chair....
I've been photographing since I was a teenager. Developed photos I took with my analog Praktica MTL 5 in my own darkroom and then printed them in black and white. Seeing the image slowly emerge in the development pool fascinated me. My love for this great medium has never gone.. Read more…
