About "Abstract detail of The Rotterdam in Escher style"

About the artwork

One of the most iconic buildings of modern Rotterdam is "De Rotterdam". This 150-metre-high building is the eye-catcher along the New Maas River. The building consists of three interconnected towers. At around 90 metres, the towers stagger a few metres, creating the idea of blocks stacked on top of each other. The building was designed by Rem Koolhaas' Office for Metropolitan Architecture.

"De Rotterdam" is named after the flagship of the Holland America line, whose ships used to depart for America from the same Wilhelmina Pier. Many photos have already been taken of this extraordinary structure. Zooming in on a detail gives you a whole new perspective. I took this photo on a winter morning, where the morning sun provided strong contrasts. The staggered towers create depth in the photo.

One of the best compliments I received on Instagram for this photo was that it resembled Escher's work. At first glance, it does indeed appear to be a geometrically impossible pattern, but if you look more closely and know the building a little, you can see how it is put together.
