The African darter (Anhinga rufa) is a bird of the order of the Suliformes and the family of the darter. It's a fish-eating bird of fresh and brackish water. The bird has a length of 80 cm. Serpentine cormorants resemble cormorants but they differ from them by their sharp, thin beak, a long heron-like neck, a different plumage and a longer tail. The male of the African snake neck bird is a dark coloured bird with a chestnut coloured neck through which a white stripe runs lengthwise that ends in a white spot around the eye. Immature birds and the female are more grey and have a pale brown chest and belly.
It is closely related to the Indian darter (Anhinga melanogaster) and is sometimes still considered a subspecies A. m. rufa.
