About ‘Along an old country road’ by Geert Van Baelen

Along an old country lane in the De Blankkaart nature reserve, situated on the border between Woumen (Diksmuide) and Houthulst in West Flanders, time seems to stand still for a moment. This valuable nature reserve is known for its vast reed beds, wet grasslands and rich birdlife. Amidst this tranquil landscape, a distinctive pollarded willow, a weathered concrete well and old fences tell the story of a region where nature and agriculture have been intertwined for generations.

In this black-and-white photograph, the striking contrasts, the delicate textures and the serene atmosphere are brought into particularly sharp relief. The winding country road and the authentic features emphasise the simplicity and timeless charm of the Flemish countryside.
