The Alaska Highway is the highway between Dawson Creek (British Columbia, Canada) and Delta Junction (Alaska, United States). This road is 2,237 km long.
The road was built in 1942 to reach Alaska from the Southern United States by road. There were already plans by the American government to realize this (in 1930 by President Herbert Hoover), but by the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941 these plans became topical and from a military point of view very urgent.
The construction of the Alcan (the military name for this road) was started on March 9, 1942 and eight months later, on October 25, 1942, the road was finished. At the height of the work, about 10,000 American soldiers were involved in its construction. The Alaska Highway received its current name in 1948 and was then opened for civilian use.
