The eider or eider duck (Somateria mollissima) is a bird in the family of ducklings (Anatidae). The scientific name of the species was published in 1758 as Anas mollissima by Carl Linnaeus. An adult specimen measures about 60 centimetres, making it larger than the mallard duck. The male is strikingly black and white in colour with a green patch on the back of the head and a whitish-pink breast. The female is brown with black stripes. It is a fast flyer, reaching 113 km per hour in horizontal flight. Raptors like the peregrine falcon reach higher speeds but do so in diving flight, so that's basically "falling". Its food consists of marine plants, molluscs, shellfish, fish and other small marine animals. What is remarkable about eider ducks is that they swallow shellfish whole (with shell). The shells are then crushed in the highly muscular stomach.
