About ‘An open gate’ by Geert Van Baelen

In the black-and-white stillness of this photograph, a narrow driveway stretches outwards, framed by an old iron gate that stands open as if already waiting for someone. The gate is weathered and unstable, its metal bars bent by years of wind, rain and neglect. It no longer guards anything with certainty. Instead, it seems to offer a silent invitation.

The absence of colour lends the scene a timeless quality. It could be yesterday, decades ago, or even a memory that never truly existed. Light and shadow replace distraction and emphasise texture: the rough surface of the driveway, the rust on the iron and the subtle traces of passing seasons. Every detail suggests a story, but nothing is fully revealed.

An open gate often symbolises a choice. Unlike a closed entrance, which marks a boundary, this gate leaves the decision to the viewer. One can go further or stay where one is. The path beyond is visible, but only partially. The destination remains unknown. This uncertainty evokes a sense of curiosity and possibility.

What are the delivery times?

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
