This picture takes us into the mystical world of Bayon, a marvel of Khmer architecture that is part of the Angkor Thom complex, near Angkor Wat . Over 210 gigantic sculpted faces adorn this magnificent temple, each paying homage to the Khmer king Jayavarman VII.
Early in the morning, before opening time, we entered Bayon, and were among the first in the complex. Which created a magical silence broken only by the soft footsteps and whispers of other adventurers. The sense of mystery and enchantment was palpable as we wandered the complex in peace, surrounded by the serenity of the waking day.
The highlight of the moment was the rising sun, which just crossed over the towers of Bayon. Making skilful use of the aperture, the sun is depicted as a beautiful star as it slowly moved up above the ancient towers of the temple.
Because we were among the first allowed to enter the complex, as we were ready before opening time. We had the temple almost completely to ourselves, this gave us all the peace to take in all the details. And take photos's without other tourists and people. So as to look for the best composition, capturing the essence of Bayon in all its glory and mystique.
