Engineer Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin began building cars in 1914 after the two men decided together a year earlier to start selling Singer brand cars. The first car was a 1400cc racer built on an Isotta Fraschini chassis. The Aston Martin name came about as a result of a victory by Lionel Martin at the "Aston Clinton Hillclimb" near the town of Aston Clinton.[8] In the workshop on Abingdon Road in Kensington, the first registered car was built in 1915.
