The Aula was built in 1966, to a design by Jo van den Broek and Jaap Bakema. Because of the plastic formal language and the unpolished concrete application, it is regarded as a textbook example of "brutalism". Due to the architectural and urban significance of the building, it is one of the youngest buildings to be protected as a National Monument (since 2009). The Aula consists of an auditorium, four lecture halls and a senate hall, an airlift and a concrete plastic by Carel Visser. Especially the protruding concrete scale of the auditorium and the ribbed roof make the Aula a unique appearance.
