The northern lights in Iceland, a beautiful natural phenomenon that can be seen between September and April in Iceland. The other months the day for this is too long and the night not dark enough to observe it.
Here I am at Grotta Lighthouse, near Reykjavik. It is at a very western point which makes this headland exactly outside the cloud cover. So it is precisely at this point that the northern lights can often be observed even though Iceland is otherwise hidden under a thick layer of clouds. For us, reason enough to try our luck there on our second night in Iceland. We were going to stay for 18 days and then so much luck on the second day? We could hardly believe it. But indeed, the stars were shining and around 23:00 we saw movement in the dark sky. With the camera, we recorded the first patches of green. Soon it became more and more and we witnessed a veritable light show in the sky. Green strands flew everywhere like flapping cloths through the dark night sky. What a magical night!
