Stadspark Oosterhout and other parks in Alkmaar originated around the 18th century. Alkmaar was surrounded by an open landscape with lakes. Around 1600, people constructed "wood" trees along the roads outside the city walls. People would then stroll along these roads and trees every Sunday. Later they turned them into parks with winding paths. This created The Wood , The Oosterhout and the Westerhout. Although I can definitely recommend a visit to the Rekerhout too.
