The Awara dam is the end of habitation along the Suriname River and is located deep in the interior of Suriname. The Maruns, the population consisting of the descendants of former enslaved people settled in many villages along the Suriname River. However, it was not possible to cross the river beyond this natural obstacle. Here, the river and its banks are still intact and give a good idea of what it was like hundreds of years ago.
