The Capelino volcano erupted some 40 years ago, causing severe earthquakes on the island of Faial. The volcano is largely underwater but even above water there is plenty to see of the remains of this impressive natural phenomenon. Between Christmas and New Year 2023, we visited our daughter on Faial one of the islands of the Azores (Portugal). These are located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Thanks to the inside information, we visited some beautiful places and, despite the turbulent weather, were able to take some stunning photos of the wild beauty of these volcanic islands. Besides Faial, we were also able to visit Pico via a ferry crossing. In fact, each island has its own characteristic beauty and is compared to New Zealand in terms of landscapes. Flights to these 2 islands are from Amsterdam via Lisbon so allow for some travel time but they are more than worth it.
