About "Axlafoss: A Hidden Treasure in the Icelandic Highlands"

by Gerry van Roosmalen

About the artwork

Deep in Iceland's pristine interior, northeast of the imposing Mýrdalsjökull glacier, lies Axlafoss, also known as Axlarfoss. This waterfall is a hidden gem in a landscape that perfectly embodies the raw beauty of Iceland. With a drop height of about 8 metres, the Hólmsá River here plunges forcefully into a narrow gorge surrounded by black sand plains, lava fields covered in moss, and rugged mountain peaks.

To reach Axlafoss, you have to follow the adventurous F210 route, a mountain road accessible only to four-wheel-drive vehicles. This journey is an experience in itself, with spectacular views and an undeniable sense of isolation.

Upon arrival, you are greeted by the mighty roar of falling water and panoramic views of the gorge. Although it is not possible to reach the foot of the waterfall, the edges of the gorge offer excellent spots for contemplation and photography. The serene surroundings and the ruggedness of nature make a visit to Axlafoss unforgettable.

For those who want to explore the untamed splendour of Iceland, Axlafoss is a place that will make you realise how powerful and beautiful nature can be.

The waterfall is also known as Axlarfoss
