In this work, you can feel the sweat on your back and the burning adrenaline in your legs. This roller derby jammer storms forward, wounded but unyielding. Blood drips from her brow, her socks pop in rainbow colours under the black outfit and skull guards. Her mouth is open in a battle cry - nothing stops her.
The style is powerful and direct, with thick black lines, energetic brushstrokes and bright typography. Red is not just an accent colour, but here represents belligerence, energy and raw emotion. The image is sharp, graphic and retro, as if straight off a punk poster. The starry helmet betrays her role of pity. The only player who can score points by overtaking opponents.
This artwork is a tribute to any player who bites through, even with blood on her face.
Roller derby is a fast-paced, physical team sport played on roller skates (quads) on an oval track. Two teams of five players each compete against each other in short rounds of play, called "jams".
Each team has one "jammer" (identified by a star on its helmet) who can score points by overtaking opponents on the track. The other players are "blockers" and try to help their own jammer and stop the opponent's jammer. This is done by strategic pushing, blocking and positioning.
The sport is intense, tactical and spectacular, with a strong sense of community and often a distinctive, punk-like culture surrounding it. It is mainly played by women, but there are also mixed and men's matches.
