Surrounded by stately cypress trees stands the basilica of Aquileia, officially Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta. The church dates back to the 11th century. The basilica played a key role in the fortunes of Aquileia, which was once one of the largest and richest cities of the early Roman empire, with the basilica itself being the largest and most important in the early Christian world to that of Rome.
The rising sun illuminates the clouds present from below, creating a true spectacle of colour in the sky.
