About "Battle of colours : Flamingo"

by Peter Bolman

About the artwork

This is a striking and highly stylised digital artwork that captures a close-up portrait of a flamingo with an intense, graphic effect. The technique evokes the atmosphere of both Neo-Fauvism and an anaglyphic (3D glasses) or glitch art aesthetic, as suggested by the image's title. The flamingo fills the central space of the vertical frame, with its distinctive S-shaped neck curving elegantly upwards and to the right. The bird's gaze is direct and penetrating, with its bright yellow eye contrasting with its surroundings.

The colour scheme is the most dramatic element. The flamingo's natural pink and white hues have been replaced by a highly saturated, almost fluorescent palette of deep red, orange and yellow.
The bird's underside and neck are dominated by intense red and magenta. The head and beak are a combination of bright white, warm yellow and dark black (for the beak tip).

The background is geometrically divided into areas of colour, adding to the digitised feel: The upper left corner is a muted, cyan-like turquoise/blue-green hue.

The top right corner is a plane of warm orange.

Glitch and Intaglio Effects: The entire image is intersected by abrupt shifts, vertical streaks and colour separations-an effect reminiscent of a misprint of an anaglyphic (red/cyan) print, or the coarse lines and shifted registration of an intaglio (intaglio) print. The paint appears to "drip" or "shift" in places.

The artwork creates a sense of energy and dislocation. It is a modern, digital reinterpretation of the animal portrait, combining the beauty of nature with the roughness of digital manipulation. It results in an image that is simultaneously recognisable, dreamy and slightly disturbing.
