About the artwork
This mixed media artwork on linen is made from paper, photos's and 3D painting techniques. This creates an extra dimension . The abstract and poetic elements in the artwork "Be the church" speak of connection and community, which are as important as the physical building of the church.
The figures in the artwork are surrounded by an aura of light, paint and symbols that radiate not only beauty but also spiritual power. The flower-like patterns and soft colours convey the idea of growth, flowering and the care we have for each other, which is a fundamental aspect of the message "Be the Church". The shapes of the figures seem to emphasise the power and importance of community and connection. They represent people coming together outside the traditional boundaries of the church, in a spiritual bond that goes beyond the walls of a building.
The floral motifs can symbolise the idea of flourishing and spiritual growth within a community, something that is constantly moving and developing, like the living church we are meant to be. Instead of being passive, the idea is presented that we as people, as a community, need to actively contribute to the world around us and thus actually represent the church, beyond the walls of a building.
