As a landmark of the German capital and a symbol of Berlin's historical and cultural development, the television tower has a firm place in German history. With its impressive height of 368 metres, it is the tallest building in Germany and the fourth tallest free-standing structure in Europe. Construction of the television tower began in 1965 and was completed in 1969. It was built in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) and was intended to demonstrate the strength of the socialist system. The tower not only served as a transmission mast for television and radio programmes, but was also a tourist attraction with a viewing platform and a revolving restaurant. Today, the Berlin TV tower is an important tourist destination and offers a breathtaking view of the city. It attracts over a million visitors every year. It is also a central point for various cultural and social events in the city. The Berlin TV Tower is more than just a building. It is a symbol of the history of Berlin and Germany. It symbolises the past, present and future of the city and is an indispensable part of Berlin's cityscape.
